Role of Rural America in Combating Climate Change

Washington, DC - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack yesterday testified to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on the role that rural America can play in addressing climate change. Secretary Vilsack discussed the importance of engaging farmers and ranchers in crafting the solution to this critical issue, and highlighted many potential economic benefits to rural communities in a cap and trade program.

USDA Announces Initial 2009-2010 Allocations for Dairy Export Incentive Program

Washington, DC - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced initial allocations under USDA's Dairy Export Incentive Program (DEIP) for the period July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010. The program helps U.S. dairy exporters meet prevailing world prices and encourages the development of international export markets in areas where U.S. dairy products are not competitive due to subsidized dairy products from other countries.

Deere & Company Successful in Voluntary Separation Initiative

Moline, Illinois - Deere & Company said today that approximately 800 salaried employees will leave the company as a result of a voluntary separation program announced in April. This total will enable the company to achieve first-year savings of approximately $75 million after a pretax expense of about $100 million primarily in the fourth quarter of 2009. Previously, the company had estimated a pretax expense for the program of $50 million.
